Crewe Heritage Centre

On This Day | 1919

Born on 16 September 1888, the youngest of nine siblings, Walter Owen Bentley founded Bentley Motors Limited on 10 July 1919.

In preparation for war in 1938 the British government searched for a suitable site to produce aero-engines, in July of that same year a 24 hectare site was acquired on the potato fields of Merrill’s Farm, Crewe.

With the war in Europe over in 1945 it was decided that the Crewe factory would be used to produce cars. In 1998 Bentley was purchased by the Volkswagen Group along with the Crewe factory, I00 years after building his first car, Walter’s name is known across the globe for creating cars with an unrivalled blend of performance and the finest craftsmanship and materials.

Bentley Motors are now Crewe’s largest employer with over 3,000 staff based at their Pyms Lane factory.

The Crewe Heritage Centre would like to congratulate Bentley Motors on this landmark anniversary.

Happy birthday Bentley , I’ve enjoyed the last 40 years with you .we had some ups and downs. Things are and never been better placed for future. After Thursday vision of the future bring it on

Happy Birthday to Bentley. But if your going to give a history lesson on the Crewe site, make sure you get it right. Don’t forget to mention the bigger brother of the two Marques. If it wasn’t for Rolls-Royce buying out Bentley it might not of survived this long.

A friend with a total of 28 years service doesn't qualify for an invitation to the celebrations. Just what do you have to do to qualify?

Some of you people need to get a grip!! You like to moan & complain about absolutely anything!! All they have done is wish a company happy birthday

Proud Heritage of British Automotive Manufacturing 🇬🇧

quite disgusted tbh that in this history there is NO mention of Rolls Royce, The ROLLS ROYCE merlin engine practically kept this country from being invaded, this piece makes it sound like it was Bentley from the start, if you are going to promote yourselves as a historic organisation then at least quote REAL history not the twisted version that appeases Bentley, don't sponsor you by any chance do they? This is a downright insult to people that worked at ROLLS ROYCE, my Dad for one, then me several years later. you simply cannot erase a large part of that factories history because it might not suit the company that inhabits it for now

Why have you written out Crewe’s relationship with Rolls Royce who acquired the Potato Fields in 1936 as a base for Manufacture that was close to already established Foundries and a Railway Link, 3 years before the outbreak of World War ll Bentley was founded in 1919 at Cricklewood in London, when RR purchased Bentley in 1931, they merged Bentley into RR Manufacturing, Vickers bought RR in 1980, before de merging the Companies selling Rolls Royce to BMW and Bentley to The Volkswagen. Audi Group, although it is as with all VWA marques a stand alone Company Just saying 😉

Why is the bit about Rolls Royce the factory site founding manufacturer been emitted from its history ?

a VW bentley that makes sense might get them cheaper now

We're really excited to announce that for the first time in nearly a decade we will be visited by 6201 'Princess Elizabeth' tomorrow, the locomotive was built right in Crewe Works in 1933 by the London Midland & Scottish Railway Company.

The steam engine will arrive at the Heritage Centre at 14:00* tomorrow, why not come on down and see this impressive piece of engineering that was #MadeInCrewe

It may be raining ☔️ but the Heritage Centre is still open, we’ve been visited by this lovely Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow that was #MadeInCrewe in 1970 only a few kilometres down the road.

If you’d like to learn more about the production of Rolls-Royce and Bentley cars in Crewe we have a great new display about the history of the factory in our Exhibition Hall.

Did you know that if you visit the Crewe Heritage Centre in a vintage road vehicle your admission to the museum is completely FREE.

When you arrive at the Heritage Centre just pull up at the yellow gates and a member of our team will direct you.

Would a 1971 Series 2a safari Landrover qualify?

Does this apply to me too?!

If there are six people in it do they all get in free?

I didn’t know that

When does a vehicle become 'vintage'?

Does it include vintage steam engines?

Does this count for motorcycles too?

Trains too
